The four fundamental forces are the interactions that do not appear to be reducible to more basic interactions: the gravitational force, the electromagnetic force, the weak nuclear force and the strong nuclear force. 

All other forces are derived from these four fundamental forces and they are known as non-fundamental forces.

 

The gravitational force is attributed to the curvature of spacetime, described by Einstein's general theory of relativity.

 

The electromagnetic force is the second strongest of the four fundamental forces.

It operates with infinite range.

Electromagnetism is the force that acts between electrically charged particles.

 

The weak nuclear force is responsible for some nuclear phenomena such as beta decay.

 

The strong nuclear force is a fundamental interaction that confines quarks into hadron particles.

The strong nuclear force is mediated by gluons.

 

You learned that the Big Bang theory is the main cosmological model explaining the existence of the observable universe. The model describes how the universe expanded from an initial state of high density and temperature.

In addition to these primordial building materials, scientists observe the gravitational effects of unknown Dark Matter surrounding galaxies. Most of the gravitational potential in the universe seems to be in this form and the Big Bang theory and various observations indicate that this excess gravitational potential is not created by atoms.

 

One of the common misconceptions about the Big Bang model is that it fully explains the origin of the universe. The Big Bang model does not describe how energy, time and space were caused, but rather it describes the emergence of the present universe from an ultra-dense and high-temperature initial state.
