Time dilation, in special relativity: the ‘slowing down’ of a clock as determined by an observer who is in relative motion with respect to that clock.

Simultaneity is required to make a comparison of the rates of clocks carried by the two observers.

A clock moving with respect to an observer appears to run slower than an identical clock at rest with respect to the observer.

 

Theory of relativity predicts a time dilatation in a gravitational field, so that, relative to someone outside of the field, clocks (or atomic processes) go slowly. This retardation is a consequence of the curvature of space-time with which the theory identifies the gravitational field.

 

The Twin paradox: 

Is a thought experiment in Special relativity with twins, one of whom makes a journey into space in a high-speed rocket and returns home to find that the twin who remained on Earth has aged more. 

One of two twins carrying a clock departs on a rocket ship from the other twin, an inertial observer, (nonaccelerating motion), at a certain time, and they rejoin at a later time. In accordance with the time dilation effect, the elapsed time on the clock of the twin on the rocket ship will be smaller than that of the inertial observer twin, the non-inertial twin will have aged less than the inertial observer twin when they rejoin.

 

Einstein in his well-known paper on Special relativity in 1905, he considered that when two clocks were brought together and synchronized and then one was moved away and brought back, the clock which had undergone the traveling would be found to be lagging behind the clock which had stayed put. Einstein considered this to be a consequence of time dilation Special relativity, not a paradox.

 

It is considered a paradox because being that at constant velocity we are unable to discern which twin is non-traveling and which twin travels.

 

Einstein discovered special relativity in 1905 with Minkowski providing his graphical representation in 1908.

The first diagram used a branch of the unit hyperbola t^2-x^2=1, thus illustrating time dilation.

Max Born in 1920 drew Minkowski diagrams by placing the ct′-axis almost perpendicular to the x-axis, as well as the ct-axis to the x′-axis, to demonstrate length contraction and time dilation in the symmetric case of two rods and two clocks moving in opposite direction.

The difference between Special Relativity and general relativity General Relativity is that in General Relativity you can use any metric which is a solution of the Einstein field equations, not just the Minkowski metric.

How big are Time dilation effects?     

 

Values for Lorentz factor γ:

 

For v/c = 0.1,  γ = 1.005

For v/c = 0.5,  γ = 1.155

For v/c = 0.9,  γ = 2.294

 

How you can see γ only starts to become large at speeds close to c.

In an electron accelerator used to treat cancers, the electrons have an energy of 20 MeV. The speed of such electrons is 0.9997c and γ is 40.

 

An electron cannot go much faster than this, but it can have a lot more energy. At CERN, electrons and positrons were accelerated to energies of 100 GeV. For such particles, v = 0.999 999 999 95c and γ is 200,000.

Nature can produce even larger particle energies. Some particles striking the Earth's upper atmosphere have energies that exceed 2×10^20 eV. If such particles are protons (with mass of about 1 GeV), their speeds would be 0.999 999 999 999 999 999 999 995 c and γ is 10^11. 

 

Electron to a velocity v=10^6 m/s.

From the de Broglie relation we get a wavelength λ≈10^(−10) m, which is about the size of an atom.

This is why we can use electron microscopes to directly probe the structure of atoms in a crystal.

The length of any object in a moving frame will appear contracted in the direction of motion.

A ‘molecular’ explanation of the Length contraction, Time dilation is needed. Einstein did not give any explanation.

The theory of relativity contains two interrelated theories by Einstein:  Special theory of relativity and General relativity.
