The Spin quantum number describes the angular momentum of an electron. An electron spins around an axis and has both angular momentum and orbital angular momentum

 

An electron has an intrinsic angular momentum, independent of its orbital angular momentum.

 

The spinning electron was originally proposed as a small rigid particle rotating about an axis.

 

Quantum interpretation of the spin: it is an internal property of elementary particles which cannot be interpreted as classical rotation of a charged sphere.

 

The consensus of all scientists about electron spin is that the electron somehow acts like a spinning object without actually spinning!

What is Spin?

Spin in quantum mechanics is an intrinsic form of angular momentum carried by elementary particles.

 

Spin is an intrinsic property of a particle because nobody was able to explain it.

 

Electrons always have "spin 1/2", this actually means "spin ħ/2". 

ħ = h/(2π)

 

Spin is an intrinsic property, because all Nobel Laureates, the greatest scientists, your professors…were not able to explain the "spin ħ/2" of the electron.

Most of the gravitational potential in the universe seems to be in this form and the Big Bang theory and various observations indicate that this excess gravitational potential is not created by atoms.

 

One of the common misconceptions about the Big Bang model is that it fully explains the origin of the universe.
