You learned that the Big Bang theory is the main cosmological model explaining the existence of the observable universe. The model describes how the universe expanded from an initial state of high density and temperature.
In addition to these primordial building materials, scientists observe the gravitational effects of unknown Dark Matter surrounding galaxies. Most of the gravitational potential in the universe seems to be in this form and the Big Bang theory and various observations indicate that this excess gravitational potential is not created by atoms.
One of the common misconceptions about the Big Bang model is that it fully explains the origin of the universe. The Big Bang model does not describe how energy, time, and space were caused, but rather it describes the emergence of the present universe from an ultra-dense and high-temperature initial state.
According to the theory of inflation, the expansion rate of the universe exploded in its earliest moments and then slowed.
The first part, the rapid expansion, would have diluted any matter and energy already present when inflation started. The second part would have released a new batch.
