Is light fundamentally a wave or a particle?

Wave-particle duality is the most fundamental description of the nature of a quantum object.

Wave–particle duality is the current mystery in modern physics.

The physicists admit wave-particle duality as the finest explanation for a broad range of observed phenomena.

 

Double-slit experiment

In 1807 Thomas Young asserted that light has the properties of a wave in an experiment called Young’s Interference Experiment, showed that lights (waves) passing through two slits (double-slit) add together or cancel each other and then interference fringes appear. This phenomenon cannot be explained unless light is considered as a wave.

 

The electron is described by what is called a wavefunction.

The square of the wavefunction's amplitude at a point describes the probability of an electron being at that point.

The photoelectric effect was first observed in 1887 by Heinrich Hertz.

 

Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize for ‘his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect’.

He explained the photoelectric effect which had been unexplainable if one only considers light as a wave. He asserted that light is a particle containing energy corresponding to their wavelength.

The photoelectric effect led to significant steps in understanding the quantum nature of light and electrons and influenced the formation of the notion of wave–particle duality.
