Particle accelerator produces a beam of fast-moving, electrically charged atomic or subatomic particles.

In particle accelerators charged particles, like electrons are accelerated with electromagnetic fields to high speeds, close to the speed of light. They are then smashed either onto a target or against other particles circulating in the opposite direction. Colliders are accelerators that create head-on collisions between particles.

 

You learned from your professors that the electron is a subatomic particle whose electric charge is negative, one elementary charge. Electrons are elementary particles because they have no known components or substructure.

 

When the electrons are sufficiently energetic the energy of the collision is transformed into matter in the form of new particles. This phenomenon is described by Ferent’s   mass–energy equivalence equation: E=mc^2 + md × vp^2
